One piece license (sic) plate holder Mazda MX5 1998 Mark 2
Mazda part number 4100-77-792

Plate holder fitted perfectly without modification. The two fixings supplied in pack were inappropriate for the application and cannot be used. Unless the correct fixings are supplied the licence plate holder should be advertised as being supplied without fittings.

Editors Note:

These are genuine Mazda parts and supplied with the correct fixings, as used by all main dealers when preparing cars for sale. Problems can occur if the fixing holes on your car have become enlarged. The solution is to either slightly re-locate the mounting and drill fresh holes, or use an alternative fixing as Bob suggests here.

Perhaps the correct fittings could be automatically supplied as a token of goodwill or for a small sum.

The rivets supplied with the plate were incorrect and did not work. The visual fitting instructions provided with the plate showed that the fixings supplied should have been of the ‘closed end trim panel’ type. This is a mechanical fitting that requires no adhesive for its fixing action.

The supplied fixing was inappropriate in respect of length and type. For the fixing to function it would need to have been secured by the application of ‘superglue’. The two holes in the license (sic) holder would have also needed to have been enlarged so that the two ‘glue lands’ would made contact.

These instructions are specific to a 1998 Mark 2 body.

Cavity anchor hollow wall fittings M4 X 25 mm Plasplug ref. no MSA 381—Homebase £2.89
Repair washers M4 X 19 mm—Homebase 99p

You need to make a small cut (approximately 3 mm) at the top and bottom of the licence plate mounting hole in the body of the car. These cuts must line-up opposite each other and are needed to accommodate the two small lugs which prevent the wall fixing turning. Use a junior hacksaw blade to make the cuts. (Plasterboard is much softer than the MX5 1998 Mark 2 body). Go slowly and insert the wall fitting into the hole to check progress. It should fit snug to the bodywork surface. Once you have reached this stage then turn the screw until your action meets firm resistance. Avoid over tightening the screw. Once both fittings are firmly in place undo the screws. Fit each one with a M4 X 19 mm washer and install the licence plate holder on the vehicle. Then you are done.
