Well, I changed the pads, and the car still stops, so I guess I did it right. I'll give them 4 stars only because I have no particular reason to give them "5 wow superb", but they seem fine.
I asked Val which pads he has on his car and he told me these ! Either that's a recommendation, or he's being cheap by not using the more expensive ones :-)
Have a look at your last garage bill to see what they charged you for a set of front pads and fitting - my bet is it's not much short of 100 quid. Using the info on miata.net/garage and a set of these, you're all done for 35, including the can of high-temperature copper grease you need to buy.
