1990 Mk1 - some extra tips - the original Mazda lower shift boot (marked M514) has a metal lip which curves over and down - the new replacement boot (marked M513) does not have this metal lip. They look different but do the same job. The M514 metal ring pulls off over the gearlever shaft quite easily once the rubber part is cut away and the new M513 slides on easily.
I used a 5mL plastic syringe and 6mm o.d. plastic pipe to suck out the old oil - removed about 100mL of horrible murky gunk that was once gear oil - towards the front of the turret inside there are 2 lower areas which you need to push the pipe into to get at all the old oil. I added 100mL of new oil, twice, swirling it around and then sucking it out to clean out as much old oil as possible. Finally added 125mL of fresh EP80 gear oil, but I think 150mL might not be too much.
