bought as a package with Upper boot and nylon cup, didn't think i'd need to replace (car's a 1994 Mk.1 1.8 with 37k miles) but thought what the hey. Original boot was completely split, so worth checking. cut old bellows to make removal easier (as previous posters have said metal ring is big enough to go over shaft) copious amounts of washing up liquid on shaft and new boot made sliding it over the shaft very easy, just make sure the nylon ring is over the ball end before fitting, could be a real pain else! instantly noticable improvement!
