My 2002 Mk 2 had covered over 145000 km and was starting to feel wallowy in the bends and crashy over bumps. I opted for the Koni sport kit as I wanted to see what difference lowering springs would make and I wanted adjustable shocks. My options were limited as I live in South Africa and postage from the USA is hugely expensive. This ruled out FM suspension kits. After an problem with the order (Koni sent the wrong shocks in the kit - I had two sets of fronts) which was handled very well by mx5parts (5 stars to them!) I had the springs and shocks fitted.
The first thing I noticed was that the car was noticeably lower in front, so much so that the tyres were almost in line with the wheel arch, while at the back, the drop was far less pronounced. This translates into a far harsher ride at the front and little option but to run the shocks set as soft as possible. I am running the rears one turn harder to even the ride out. On full soft the rear suspension feels far softer than the front on the same setting.
The uneven drop also looks strange and I can't help but think that Koni have the spring length and rates a bit out especially with the fronts, which seem to have come down with more than the promised 35mm while the rear has come down less!
The shocks get full marks - they look good and the adjustment works simply and well. I have marked the entire package down because of the uneven drop and harsh ride especially up front. All in I'm happy but not as happy as I thought I'd be after reading all the hype about Koni's and the other review on this site by David. I am loking forward to some track time to try different settings and see how well the shocks perform at 10/10ths.
