Camshaft Timing Belt Kit

£49.95

by William Overton Date Added: Thursday 22 June, 2006
As usual with all orders from MX5 parts the kit arrived the next day. I had no trouble fitting the belt, idler, tensioner and spring. I have an early Mk1 and I would advise leaving the crankshaft seal well alone if (as in my case) it is not leaking. The early Mk1's have a short crankshaft nose and engagement of the timing pully and woodruff key is marginal. Removal of the of the timing pully and bolt (necessary to replace the seal) can create problems on reassembly. There is a detailed explaination on the american Miata.net site regarding potential problems with the short nose crank.
If you are going to replace the belt on your own one tip that I used whilst installing the belt was to clamp the two cam shafts before removing the old belt. The camshafts have a hexagon sections cast into the shafts after the second cam lobes. Fit an adjustable wrench/spanner to each of the two shafts on the hexagon so that the shank of the wrenches/spanners cross, then simply clamp the two together (I used a wood working clamp). The inlet shaft has a tendency to move when removing the old belt due to the force of the valve springs acting on the No 2 cylinder cam lobes. The method worked for me both shafts remained stationary. Hope this tip helps.
