I ordered this filter along with the long reach plugs and magnecor 8mm leads. Delivery took over 2 weeks (to Portugal), which didn't make very happy, but that's not why I'm rating this 3 stars. I tracked the package and it soon arrived in Lisbon, but the local transporter took ages to get it to my door! Mx5parts did everything OK, so I'm happy with mx5parts.
I first fitted the plugs and the leads. Very easy and fast as long as you have the right tool. The plugs and the leads changed the engine. Response was imediately faster and the sound much better and deep. I though, WOW, this really made a difference, I can't wait to change the air filter (which I though would make the most difference, at least in sound!)!!!
When I changed the air filter (super easy, super fast...under 30 seconds for sure, just unclip the 2 clips of the air box, take the old, put the new, close, voilá), I was expecting a much nicer sound, but the sound was the same thru out the revs! Aparentely the filter didn't do anything noticeble! Before installing anything, I'd timed some acceleration conditions, like how much time from 1500rpm to 6000rpm in 2nd gear . Seven seconds before, and still the same with new plugs, leads and filter, so i guess any performance increase in only in your mind. The sound did just with the plugs and leads, engine response too, it runs smoother, but that's it!
I have a 2001 mx-5 1.6 mk2.5, and my advice is, buy the plugs and the leads, that makes a noticeble difference, the filter will only be worth for being a lifetime filter, with a good quality, don't expect ANY (noticeble) changes with just the filter! Cheers
