This item fixed my Mk1 ('97) overheating problem: the engine wold overheat when driven moderately hard, dumping hot water into the overflow tank until there wasn't much left in the rad. I suspected the rad wasn't flowing well and did the following test:

Started engine from cold
placed hand on left hand side of rad (away from fan)
Left the engine warm and water pressure build up a bit

Hot water started to come into the rad and the heat gradually spread out to the right hand side - towards the fan.
With a new item, the heat is very quickly distributed across the rad - there is no gradual spread.

This is what I did. I don't recommend you do it, in case you chop your fingers off with the fan or burn yourself :)

Anyway, seems a good item and time will tell if it's up to the job. Took about 2.5 hours to fit and I did take the tray off - don't know how you get the bottom hose without doing it. As others have said, oder at least two fan mounting bolts as the bottom ones corrode badly and don't lose/break the circlips for the mounting pins/bobbins. Rating: 5 of 5 Stars! [5 of 5 Stars!]
