I purchased this exhaust as it seemed like good value for a dual-exit exhaust and I trusted mx5parts to have a good product (after many successful past purchases). It arrived with the usual speedy delivery I\'ve come to expect from mx5parts and was well packaged. First impressions were also good, it was well polished with good looking welds and nice looking oval exhaust tips.
Fitting the exhaust went smoothly, I stuck the template to the car with some masking tape and with a new stanley knife blade slowly made the incisions. Getting the old exhaust off was a bit of a bugger as it was one piece which mean\'t threading it through underneath the car was tricky - I ended up getting the hacksaw out. Attaching the new exhaust also went well - hangers were all in the right places - although I\'d recommend getting some new rubber hangers as mine were well past their sell by date. I also purchased and fitted the \"silenced\" cat-bypass pipe which seemed like a no-brainer for £50.
Here-on-in is where it goes wrong...
Previously I had the stock exhaust fitted which did it\'s job well but was a bit dull, so I was expecting a louder and \"sportier\" sound (I would have been disappointed if it wasn\'t a louder than the stock exhaust) - I have had stainless steel sports exhausts on almost all of my previous cars. Initially with the decat pipe fitted it was like not having a silencer at all, *incredibly* loud and obnoxious sounding - I ran it like that for a couple of days before refitting the cat. This made little difference, it was still way way way too loud! So loud it was showing up the local boy racers in their Novas and Saxos! I posted a question on one of the mx5 forums and got replies saying \"this is the loudest MX-5 exhaust available\" and \"it sets my next door neighbours car alarm off when I drive past - but I like it like that\" - well I certainly don\'t!
I spoke to MX5parts as I thought it may have a faulty silencer (e.g. missing the silencer bit inside!), they said they couldn\'t tell me how loud it should or shouldn\'t be because they had no experience of actually using one of these exhausts - useless I thought! They said to try running it in for a couple of weeks and it should quieten down. Well, those 3 weeks were the worst in my 5 years of MX-5 ownership - very embarrassing to be driving a car that the local chavs would be proud of!
The sound at idle was loud but not too bad, under engine load from 2500 - 5000 rpm it was very boomy - so much so I couldn\'t hear the stereo or my girlfriend (a plus point to some maybe?!). If I put the engine under load by going up a hill it would get twice as loud again!
I spoke to MX-5 parts again and was told if the exhaust was faulty they\'d take it back but if they received it and it wasn\'t i\'d be liable for the courier charges. So I took it to a local exhaust place and they confirmed it was fitted correctly with air tight seals on all the joints and it appeared to not be faulty - they said it was a cheap exhaust made in China with minimal silencing - just a couple of baffles rather than proper silencing material which would explain it resonating and being boomy.
I ended up selling it on eBay and getting a custom one made up by a stainless steel exhaust company. It cost twice as much but to be honest if the mx5parts exhaust was £1.50 I still wouldn\'t want it.
In conclusion and in my honest opinion, this exhaust is far too loud for daily use and would certainly be too loud for trackdays. Spend a bit extra and get a proper one.
