If you are planning to replace your cables because your windows
aren't winding up or down properly, I suggest you do two things :
Firstly, check that you can't fix the problem with some lithium based
grease in the window runners at the sides. If you car is old, you may want to check the 'door to glass weatherstrip', as the felt backing
material on it can degrade leaving just rubber which drags on the window slowing it's movement to a crawl.
Secondly, as someone else stated, this is no job for an amateur, so get yourself a workshop manual, some fresh grease and prepare to allow almost 3hours for the first door, and 1hour for the second once you've figured out whats required.
Incidentally, the old cables on my 1992 import weren't rusted at all, but I replaced them anyway, cleaned everything and applied fresh grease to all moving parts, both windows now run very smoothly.
