Make sure you've got a good workshop manual and read the tips from other purchasers.
The job to replace the cables isn't particularly difficult just time consuming.
Definitely replace both cables and the nylon drum - this is not a job you want to do twice!
One of the nastiest bits is removing the plastic vapour barrier which is stuck to the door with black non-setting mastic. I fitted a new one as it is much cleaner and easier than dealing with the old one with its remains of black stringy mastic!
I took the opportunity to apply some sound deadening in the door and apply some waxoyl while I had access, so the job took me about 4 hours in total.
I've had my Mk1 for seventeen years and this is the first thing that has broken!
