Update. As it turned out, these discs lasted a total of 42,000 miles by which time they had pretty much started to disintegrate. I had also fitted a rear set at the same time together with EBC Green Stuff pads. With the benefit of hindsight I can now appreciate how unpleasant it is to be approaching the back of a petrol tanker without any braking power on approaching a set of temporary traffic lights whilst on the way to work.
I think the moral of the story is:
1. If, as was in my case, you don't pay attention to the condition of your brakes or pay to get your car serviced regularly, you run the risk of pads and discs failing just when you need them to work.
2. Maybe it's not such a good idea to replace a whole set at the same time.
I don't think that I'm particularly aggressive when it comes to braking so maybe I was a bit naiive in thinking that the setup would last for a lot longer than it actually did. Lesson learned.
