The number plate plinth isn't a perfect fit but I have fitted mine to my MX-5 MK1 and it looks great.
I was replacing the 21 year old rusty metal bracket type number plate mount.
I didn't use the supplied fittings as I felt they wouldn't hold the new plinth securely enough.
Instead I drilled holes in the front bumper and through the solid plastic bumper frame behind it, and attached the number plate plinth with flat head bolts, washers and nuts. The head of the bolt fits nicely into the recess in the plinth so it doesn't touch the back of the number plate.
The supplied rubber strip fits along the top of the plinth and down both sides. It doesn't go all the way round. I would suggest this should be glued on to the plinth before starting the job to stop it from moving.
My number plate plinth is held nice and securely to the front of the car and the gaps between it and the bumper are very narrow.
Although I agree that it would be better if the plinth was designed more accurately to fit the shape of the bumper my new number plate plinth looks much better than the old one.
