MX5 Suspension

Suspension

Suspension systems serve a dual purpose — contributing to the car’s road holding/handling and braking for good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably well isolated from road noise, bumps, and vibrations.

These goals are generally at odds, so the tuning of suspension involves finding the right compromise. It is important for the suspension to keep the wheels in contact with the road surface as much as possible, because all the forces acting on the vehicle do so through the contact patches of the tyres. The suspension also protects the vehicle itself and any cargo or luggage from damage and wear.

Worn suspension components can adversely affect not only the overall handling of the car, but also tyre wear, braking efficiency and even fuel consumption. It can be difficult to recognise a problem with your suspension system because loss of performance normally occurs gradually over a period of time. Some common symptoms of worn or broken suspension components include:

• Knocking noises when going over even minor bumps
• The car feels more “bouncy” than normal
• The car pulls to one side even on a straight, flat piece of road
• Uneven tyre wear

If you suspect there is a problem, or even if you just want to upgrade your suspension to a full coil over kit, uprated bushes or a strut brace for improved handling, then we’re here to help. Below is an indication of what we charge for some of the most common suspension related jobs.
