My car started to overheat in the hot weather this summer - fan, thermostat and thermoswitch all working fine but radiator very hot at top but cold at bottom, after some time running. Some steam but mostly just incredibly hot air coming from vents and gauge going nuts! Obvious blockage but decided as it was the original radiator (i have a mk1 1.6 1998) that it was worth replacing, rather than bothering to try flushing through.
Saved myself over £150 on the cost of a radiator from anywhere else. Mazda wanted £394 to replace the rad, including coolant and labour. (Non-Mazda garage wanted even more!!) (£246 for the radiator only exc vat).
I was going to fit it myself but lack of time meant that I couldn't. However Mazda dealer were quite prepared to fit it for labour cost only which is reasonable. If you're certain that it's your radiator that needs the work, then this is a must - save yourself the money! And if you are going to do it yourself invest in the MX5 workshop manual, which is very detailed on this (and all other strip downs and rebuilds).
