Nitty gritty first- arrived immediately and it's easy to fit- took about an hour because I lost the use of my left arm in a bike accident so had to supervise my teenage son and check his work. Instructions are easy- they're for Americans, so the company has to make them fabulously simple because of litigation.
Sound is lovely, a nice "proper sportscar" burble especially when the engine is under load at any revs. It gives a tiny bit of extra power, just noticable when pulling at low revs.
I get a curious, quiet, hollow "bonk" noise from under the bonnet when turning the wheels with the engine idling and the brakes on. I discovered it's the reaction to the load of the power steering being temporarily taken off the engine as the fluid helps turn the wheels, causing a small backfire amplified by the rigid, straight through induction pipe. The air hisses as it's being sucked into that giant filter, like a supercharger.
I'm told Top Gear awarded the MX5 "Best British Sportscar" recently, and driving it with the top down, the sun shining, exhaust burbling and early Fleetwood Mac on the stereo confirms it's the best thing on four wheels.
The MX5 is a pastiche of the Lotus Elan, and this bit of kit is what should have been on it in the first place.
Fabulous. Worth every penny.
