The MX-5 Owners Club Go for 2 World Records at the Spring Rally

The MX-5 Owners Club Go for 2 World Records at the Spring Rally
30 April 2019

On Sunday the 28th April 2019, the MX-5 Owners Club held their annual Spring Rally at the Elvington Airfield Yorkshire, and alongside the usual meeting of like-minded MX-5 fans to meet and speak with some of the UK's leading MX-5 specialists including ourselves, this year's rally came with a twist, not one but two World Record attempts.

After months of organisation by the club, fingers were crossed on Sunday morning that the MX-5 community would turn out in force to try and break the two World Records and boy, they did not disappoint as people quite literally turned out in their thousands, including a special guest appearance from the 30th Anniversary MX-5 Mk4!

The two separate record attempts were, 1) The most ever Mazdas moving simultaneously on a single track and 2) The most ever convertibles moving simultaneously on a single track. The records to beat were 683 and 270 respectively.

Club organiser Iain Fleming's hard work looked like paying off in spectacular fashion when the registration team started to run out of numbers and shortly after 11.15am MX-5 owners took to the Airfield 4 abreast ready for take-off including our very own Mk1, Mk3, and Mk4.

With careful coordination and drivers tuning in to a local radio frequency to await instructions, tensions grew and the anticipation built as everyone waited patiently to get the World Record attempts underway.

Once the green lights had gone out and the convoy began to move, drivers obeyed their instructions and kept to just 2 car lengths apart along the 4-mile track so that they stood the best chance of being able to move in unison and smash the World Record.

The Result - over 1500 MX-5s and a handful of Mazda's were all on the airfield moving at the same time for the first World Record attempt and after several laps, none convertibles and those with hardtops exited the track for all those with their tops down braving a brisk Yorkshire morning to carry on the mantle and go for the second World Record attempt of over 270 convertibles all moving on a single track at one time.

Whilst the MX-5 Owners Club are still waiting for attempts to be checked and verified, the MX-5 community rallied in true style that only MX-5 owners can and we are extremely confident that not only will both records be broken, but they will be absolutely smashed!

Congratulations to everyone involved and to the MX-5 Owners Club for putting on such a great event - something we are extremely proud to have supported and been a part of.
