Turbocharged Thrills: A Road trip in the Mighty MK1 Mazda MX5

Turbocharged Thrills: A Road trip in the Mighty MK1 Mazda MX5
Wednesday, 31 January 2024

There's something daunting but exhilarating about hitting the open road for a 4-hour long road trip, and when that road trip involves a turbocharged MK1 Mazda MX5, you know it's bound to be an adventure filled with speed, excitement, and unexpected pit stops.

So, buckle up and join us on a journey through the picturesque landscapes of the UK, as we embarked on an unforgettable road trip with our trusty MX5.

MX5parts roadtrip with the Mk1

Our journey kicked off at the heart of MX5 enthusiasm – the MX5parts headquarters in Portsmouth. Surrounded by the newer MX5 models, our MK1 perched in the line-up ready for a blast through the south, into the midlands.

The excitement was palpable as we revved up the 1.8-litre turbocharged engine of our beloved MK1. The road beckoned, and we eagerly pointed the car north, ready for the thrill of the drive.

Our first notable pit stop, aside from the local BP to fill up with E10, was at the famous Diddly Squat Farm Shop, owned by none other than Jeremy Clarkson.

The MX5, now humming with the tunes of its turbocharger, drew attention as we rolled into the farm shop's parking lot. Surrounded by other car enthusiasts, the MX5 carved its way into the scenery and sat perfectly in front of the Diddly squat sign, unfortunately the shop itself was closed so no luck obtaining any famous ‘Cow Juice’.

The next leg of our journey took us further north, and as the day transitioned into a golden evening, through Chipping Norton and into Coventry, we found ourselves at Caffeine & Machine, The Hill – a haven for automotive enthusiasts.

The late hour meant the venue was quiet, but our MX5 was not one to be overshadowed. A beautifully lowered Peugeot 306 joined our ranks, and together, we created a mini car meet in the car park.

Caffeine & Machine proved to be the perfect spot for our MX5 to bask in the attention it so rightly deserved. The turbocharged engine became the centre of conversations among the staK and onlookers.

The MX5 wasn't just a car; it was a conversation starter, a grand tourer that had travelled near on 400 miles without missing a beat.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we seized the opportunity to capture the moment. The MX5, with its sleek design and turbocharged power, posed for the camera, immortalising the adventure in a series of snapshots. The empty car park became a canvas for our much-loved MK1 to get some shots prior to further modifications.

MX5parts roadtrip with the Mk1

With memories captured, it was time for the final stretch of our journey. Our destination – Nottinghamshire, where the MK1 Mazda MX5 was destined for greatness in the coming weeks. The turbocharged road trip was not just a joyride; it was a prelude to something big, something that would elevate our MX5 to new heights.

As we cruised into Nottinghamshire, the anticipation hung in the air. Plans for the MK1 were carefully laid out, and the road trip served as the perfect preface to the exciting modifications and enhancements that await. The turbocharged engine, already a star of the road, would soon be complemented by new additions, promising an even more thrilling driving experience.

And so, our road trip came to an end, but the excitement lingered. The MK1 Mazda MX5, with its turbocharged spirit, had conquered the open roads, drawn attention at iconic stops, and paved the way for the upcoming transformation in Nottinghamshire.

The journey was more than just a series of miles; it was a celebration of the MX5's enduring spirit and the camaraderie of fellow petrolheads on the road.
