Guide to Replacing Your MX5 Oil Filter

Guide to Replacing Your MX5 Oil Filter
27 July 2023

Regularly changing your MX5's oil filter is an essential part of maintaining your beloved roadster's engine health. A clean and functioning oil filter ensures that contaminants are efficiently removed from the engine oil, promoting optimal performance and longevity. In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of replacing the oil filter for each of the 4 Mks of MX5, ensuring your vehicle remains in top condition.

Understanding the Importance of a Clean Oil Filter

The oil filter plays a critical role in preserving the engine's well-being. It effectively filters out impurities such as dirt, metal particles, and sludge from the engine oil, preventing them from circulating and causing damage. Over time, the filter accumulates debris and becomes less efficient. Therefore, regular replacement is vital to safeguard your MX5's engine and optimize its performance.

Gather the Necessary Tools and Parts

Before getting started, make sure you have the following tools and parts ready:

  • New oil filter (compatible with your MX5 model)
  • Drain pan
  • Socket wrench
  • Oil filter wrench or cap-style filter wrench
  • Rag or paper towels
  • Funnel
  • New engine oil (appropriate for your MX5 model)
  • Vehicle jack and stands (for some models)

Identifying Your MX5 Model

The MX5 (Miata) comes in four main generations - Mk1 (NA), Mk2 (NB), Mk3 (NC), and Mk4 (ND). It's essential to know your specific model as the location and method of accessing the oil filter may vary slightly between generations.

Locating the Oil Filter

Mk1 (NA): The oil filter on the NA model is situated horizontally on the right-hand side of the engine underneath the inlet manifold behind the alternator. You access it from above the engine although there is not a lot of room so it can be fiddly.

Mk2 (NB): The NB model's oil filter is also located on the right hand side in the same position as the Mk1.

Mk3 (NC): For the NC model, the oil filter is located on the left hand side, near the starter motor and is attached vertically on to the oil filter housing. You can access it easily from below the vehicle.

Mk4 (ND): The ND model's oil filter is positioned on the right hand side, closer to the front and is also fitted vertically on to the filter housing. Accessing it from below the car is the most straightforward method.

Replacing the MX5 Oil Filter - 9 Steps

Now, let's walk through the general steps to replace the oil filter on your MX5:

Step 1: Warm up the engine: Start your MX5 and let it run for a few minutes to warm up the oil. Warm oil flows more freely, making the draining process more efficient.

Step 2: Elevate the vehicle (if necessary): For models with limited access to the oil filter from above, use a vehicle jack and stands to raise the car safely and gain access to the oil filter from below.

Step 3: Drain the old oil: Place the drain pan under the oil pan and use a socket wrench to remove the drain plug. Let the old oil drain completely.

Step 4: Remove the old oil filter: Using the oil filter wrench or cap-style filter wrench, carefully loosen and remove the old oil filter. Be prepared for some residual oil to spill during this step.

Step 5: Prepare the new oil filter: Before installing the new oil filter, apply a thin layer of fresh engine oil to the gasket to create a proper seal.

Step 6: Install the new oil filter: Screw on the new oil filter by hand until it's snug. Do not overtighten, as it could damage the gasket or the filter housing.

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil: Using a funnel, pour the appropriate amount of new engine oil into the engine. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct oil capacity.

Step 8: Check the oil level: Start the engine and let it run for a minute. Then, turn off the engine and wait a few moments for the oil to settle. Check the oil level on the dipstick and add more if needed.

Step 9: Clean up: Wipe away any spilled oil and ensure everything is tidy before lowering the vehicle.

Congratulations! You've successfully completed the oil filter replacement for your MX5! Regularly replacing the oil filter will help keep your engine running smoothly and efficiently. Always remember to use high-quality oil filters and engine oil, ensuring the longevity of your MX5 and your driving enjoyment. By following this guide and performing regular maintenance, you can continue to relish the exhilarating performance of your MX5. Happy top-down driving!
