Project Mk1 Turbo - Part 2: Upgrading the Bodywork

Project Mk1 Turbo - Part 2: Upgrading the Bodywork
Monday, 1 September 2025

The MX5 Restorer team are back with part 2 of the latest Lights Up Lights Down video with the next stage of their turbocharged Mk1 MX-5 refresh. In Part 1 they transformed the drivetrain with a new clutch, lightweight flywheel and quick-shift kit. Now it’s time to tackle the exterior, and that means diving deep into the bodywork.

Stripping Down

With the interior removed, attention turns to the tired rear quarters and a cracked windscreen surround that’s been hiding corrosion since a previous repair. Years of fibreglass over-fenders and filler have trapped moisture, so the only way forward is to cut back to solid metal and see what’s really lurking underneath.

Revealing the Issues

As the old panels come off, the extent of the rust becomes clear. Fortunately, the upper sill sections remain solid, but the inner sill and jacking points need a full rebuild. It’s messy, painstaking work, grinding, cutting and cleaning, but essential to give this iconic roadster a new lease of life.

What’s Next

The team will replace both rear quarters, rebuild the inner sills and prep the car for a fresh finish. In Part 3, we’ll see the new panels welded in and the suspension bushes refreshed before the Turbo Mk1 heads back to the road stronger than ever.
