Spring into action with Mk3 suspension upgrades

Spring into action with Mk3 suspension upgrades
17 April 2019

Whether you've just bought a Mk3 MX5 or have been running one for a while it's well worth looking at potential suspension upgrades. Obviously the cars handle well out of the box but there are a couple of known issues MX5 Parts can help you address, whatever your budget.

First up, ride height. Most standard Mk3s stand very tall on their springs, spoiling the looks and making the handling a little spiky on the limit. Some might consider lowering springs a bit too 'boy racer' or worry about ruining the ride quality but, in fact, they can actually improve looks, handling and comfort at the same time! MX5 Parts has various options too. Eibach springs are very popular among Mk3 owners, the progressively wound versions meaning a cake-and-eat-it combination of lower ride height and improved comfort when paired with standard or factory Bilstein dampers. The custom tuned IL Motorsport Eibach set offers the most dramatic drop, the basic 30mm package less extreme and more affordable if you only want a mild tweak.

Worn anti-roll bar drop links are another common issue on Mk3s, spoiling the handling and resulting in annoying clonks and rattles. If yours are going you may wish to upgrade to sturdier IL Motorsports replacements or even invest in adjustable ones if want to play with your set-up.

From there the world is your oyster, up to and including uprated anti-roll bars and full spring and damper packages to suit every budget. Bushings are another consideration and worth doing if you're refreshing your suspension. Superpro or Polybush versions sharpen the handling and are popular with track drivers but can feel harsh for the road compared with standard rubber ones - whichever you prefer a fresh set can transform a car with a few miles under its belt. Click here to choose the ones that fit your requirements.

And this is the key point. Suspension set-up is subjective and down to taste so ask around, consider what you want before you start work and make changes step by step with time to appreciate how your car handles as a result. And, most importantly, if you've changed any components on your suspension get the geometry checked by a trusted alignment shop as a matter of course - good set-up is key to making the most of your fancy new suspension bits so make sure yours is bang-on!
