You turn the key and nothing happens. Or there's a click. Or the engine cranks but refuses to fire. Whatever variation you're dealing with, a Mazda MX-5 that won't start is one of those problems that can send you down expensive rabbit holes if you don't approach it methodically.
The good news is that the vast majority of MX-5 starting problems fall into a handful of well-understood categories, and most of them can be diagnosed at home before you order a single part.
This guide walks through the diagnostic process in order of likelihood and ease of checking, so you can narrow the fault quickly rather than guessing.
Step One: Listen Carefully
Before you check anything, turn the key again and pay close attention to what happens. The sound, or absence of it, tells you a great deal.
Nothing at all. No click, no crank, complete silence. This points to a loss of power before the starter even tries to engage: dead battery, a corroded or disconnected terminal, a blown fuse, a failed relay, or, on MX-5s with a factory or aftermarket immobiliser, a security system that's cutting the circuit entirely.
A single loud click from the engine bay. The starter solenoid is engaging but the motor isn't spinning. This is usually a very flat battery (just enough charge to fire the solenoid but not turn the motor) or a starter motor that's failing internally. On older Mk1 and Mk2 cars, this can also be caused by the starter relay rather than the unit itself.
Rapid clicking - click-click-click-click. A telltale sign of a battery that's too flat to crank the engine. The solenoid keeps trying and releasing as voltage collapses. Check and charge the battery before anything else.
The engine cranks, turns over normally, but won't fire. The starting system is working fine. Your problem is fuel, spark, or immobiliser preventing the engine from running once it does turn over.
Step Two: The Battery
Whatever the symptom, the battery is always worth ruling out first. A healthy 12V car battery should read around 12.6 volts or above when fully charged and at rest. Much below 12 volts and it may not have enough capacity to crank reliably, even if the dashboard lights come on normally. Dashboard illumination takes very little current, starting an engine takes a great deal more.
Check the terminals before anything else. Corroded battery terminals are a surprisingly common cause of Mazda MX-5 starting problems, particularly on older cars. A green-white crust around the terminal post creates resistance that drops available voltage under starting load. Clean terminals back to bare metal and coat them after reconnection.
If the battery charges up and the car starts, but the battery goes flat again quickly, the battery itself may have failed internally or there's a drain somewhere in the circuit.
A battery that's more than four or five years old on a car used infrequently is worth replacing as a matter of course, they're a relatively low-cost item and a failed battery is one of the most common reasons an MX-5 won't start.
Step Three: Relays - The Overlooked Culprit
Before jumping straight to the starter motor, check the relays. On the Mk1 MX-5 in particular, the main relay (sometimes called the EGI relay) is notorious for failing and causing a no-start condition. It controls power to the fuel injection system and fuel pump, when it fails, the engine cranks normally but won't fire because no fuel is being delivered. Symptoms are often intermittent at first, more common when the engine is hot, and then progress to a complete no-start.
The starter relay is also worth checking across all generations. It sits in the fuse box and can be swapped for an identical relay from another position in the box to test quickly, if the car suddenly starts, you've found your culprit.
Step Four: The Starter Motor
If the battery and relays check out but the engine still won't crank, the starter motor is the next area to investigate. MX-5 starter motor problems tend to show up in a few specific ways: the aforementioned single loud click, a grinding noise as the starter gear fails to engage the flywheel ring gear cleanly, or intermittent failure, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, which often indicates worn brushes inside the motor.
On the Mk1 NA, the MX-5 Mk1 starter motor sits at the bottom of the engine and is prone to heat soak, the heat from the exhaust system below can cook the unit over time, leading to failures that are particularly common when the engine is hot. A cold-start fine, hot-start won't-crank pattern on an NA is a strong indicator of a heat-soaked starter.
Mk2 starter issues follow a similar pattern. The NB starter motor is tucked in a similarly warm location and shares the heat soak vulnerability of the Mk1 unit. If your MX-5 Mk2 cranks fine first thing in the morning but struggles or refuses after a hot run, the starter is the first thing to suspect.
Testing a starter motor properly requires measuring the current draw under load, but a basic test is to have someone crank the engine while you listen closely to the starter. A healthy unit spins freely and quietly. A laboured, slow-sounding crank, particularly if the battery is confirmed good, suggests the motor is struggling internally.
Step Five: Immobiliser
MX-5 immobiliser problems are worth considering whenever the engine cranks but refuses to start, particularly if the fault appeared suddenly and there's been no obvious mechanical cause.
The factory immobiliser fitted to MK2 and later MX-5s uses a transponder chip in the key that's read by an antenna ring around the ignition barrel. If the chip stops communicating, due to a flat battery in the key fob, a damaged key, or a fault in the reader itself, the ECU won't enable the fuel or ignition systems, and the car simply cranks without firing.
A quick check: look at the immobiliser LED on the dashboard (usually near the instrument cluster) after turning the key. If it flashes rapidly or stays on when it should be off, the system may not have disarmed. Try the spare key if you have one, if the car starts immediately with the spare, the transponder in your main key has failed.
Some older MX-5s have been fitted with aftermarket immobilisers over the years, and these can cause their own set of problems, particularly if poorly installed or if the original installer is no longer traceable for reset codes.
Step Six: Fuel Delivery
If the engine cranks freely but won't fire, and the immobiliser has been ruled out, listen for the fuel pump. When you switch the ignition to the second position, key turned but not yet cranking, you should hear a brief whirr from the fuel pump as it primes the system.
It only lasts a second or two, but it's audible with the car in a quiet environment. No priming sound at all suggests the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay, or its fuse has failed.
You can also check fuel pressure at the fuel rail if you have access to a gauge, correct pressure confirms the pump is working, and low or zero pressure points you toward the pump or a blocked fuel filter.
Step Seven: Spark and Ignition
If fuel is confirmed, the remaining possibility is a loss of spark. Remove a plug lead (Mk1, early Mk2) or a coil pack (NC, ND) and test for spark using a known-good earthing point. No spark from any cylinder points to a failed crank position sensor or ignition module. Spark from some but not others suggests individual coils or leads, which brings you back to the misfire diagnostic territory.
Work Through It in Order
The key with any MX-5 starting problem is not to assume. Battery → relays → starter → immobiliser → fuel → spark.
Each step rules out a category cleanly, and most owners find the answer well before the end of the list. A methodical approach costs you time but saves you from fitting parts the car didn't need.
When you do identify the fault, you'll have the confidence of knowing exactly what's failed, and what the right fix is.
